Shelter From the Storm Animal Rescue was formed in 2005 by Allison Davies in response to the overwhelming amount of animals being euthanized in area shelters. Shelter From The Storm is an all-breed cat and dog rescue and focuses on alleviating overcrowding in shelters and helping adoptable/treatable animals. Since its inception, Shelter from the Storm helped the Humane Society of the United States during Hurricane Katrina by transporting over 100 animals to safety in Wisconsin, where they were vetted, placed in foster care, and ultimately placed in forever homes. We also worked with the HSUS in dealing with a local hoarding situation at the Thyme and Sage Ranch in Richland Center, Wisconsin. Thyme and Sage was operating as an animal rescue and as the animal control agency for that area, but was housing in excess of 300 animals. Many of our pets are placed into a home environment with a suitable foster home. Here they begin basic training, receive socialization, and learn what it’s like to live in a home. We also attend to their medical needs including vaccinations, heartworm testing, feline leukemia/FIV testing, deworming, and flea/tick prevention. In 2008, in furtherance of its mission, the Spay Me Clinic was opened. Dr. Richard Brown, Elizabeth Yohn, CVT, and Allison Davies, have all performed high volume spay/neuter procedures in a variety of locations and settings and used their knowledge to set up Spay Me Clinic.
AppointmentWe offer three main programs.
Spay Me! Clinic is a high volume, affordable care, spay/neuter and wellness clinic that was founded in July of 2008 in furtherance of Shelter from the Storm’s Mission to alleviate the need for euthanasia of healthy animals. Our first home was the lower level of our shelter. Staff at this point consisted of one Veterinarian, one volunteer CVT, and our director. We were performing spay/neuter procedures one to two days a week. Within no time, the need for our services became more evident; by July of 2009, we were performing high volume spay & neuter 4 days a week, as well as 2 Saturdays a month.
As a rescue, we often take in animals with special medical needs because we have resources available to us that enable us to care for them when other shelters and rescues cannot. We take in animals who would otherwise not have a second chance at life. These animals come to us in need of cherry eye repairs, FHO surgery, ACL repairs, masses or tumors, dental disease & even broken bones. They have been hit by vehicles, severely injured, and in some cases left without necessary veterinary care for extensive periods of time. We address their medical issues as needed and put them up for adoption
SFTS is a "Managed Intake" shelter, meaning we choose which animals come into our organization. Dogs and cats who are in need of being rescued from puppy mills, irresponsible breeders, and overcrowded shelters are our #1 priority. If we have the space and resources available, we will reach out to you via phone or email to set up a rehoming appointment. We require a $50 surrender donation via cash or check to help off-set the cost of care and medical services for the animal, but the fee can be waived for low-income individuals. Due to the limited amount of space and resources that we have
We have a lot of ways you can help us in our mission.
Howdy Pal! As you may already know, my name is Bowdie. If you're here, I'm hoping that means you are looking to join my team and help out my friends. Like many cats and dogs that come to Shelter From the Storm, I was once very alone and afraid with no family or friends to call my own. Since coming here, I've met so many people who love me and have made sure I'm happy and healthy. My goal is to help 39 of my friends looking for homes for 30 days. That's a total of $12,519. You can help one animal for one day for only $10.70. My hooman friends here at SFTS, have been helping me get the word out through Facebook Fundraisers, Social Media, our Online Giving Platform, and through the Mail. Check out our progress below!
We are always in need of dedicated volunteers to help with a number of different opportunities that we have available. Volunteer opportunities include helping at the shelter, Spay Me Clinic, adoption events, various fundraisers throughout the year, and fostering. We are looking for volunteers who can make a commitment to volunteering at least once a month for 6 months and can commit to helping at three different fundraisers throughout the year.

Being a foster parent is a very rewarding experience. You take in an animal and provide them with love, socialization, and training until they find their forever home. Foster care allows them to learn how to be part of a family. It also helps us learn about each animals' needs and get a better picture of their personality. Fostering saves two lives because it opens up a kennel at the shelter for us to save another animal! We need foster homes for dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens! SFTS provides all needed medical care and can provide supplies such as food and treats, leashes and harnesses, toys, crates, and dog beds to fosters if needed. Please keep in mind that we do not foster-to-adopt, nor are fosters allowed to adopt their first foster animal.
